A button down shirt, whether it be oxford cloth or not, paired with a suit is a fine combination. It is traditional and it is American. The button down collar as we know it, although originated by Brooks Brothers and thus sold primarily to the upper class, is now a shirt that transcends socio-economic boundaries. It is a combination worn by our fathers, our father’s fathers and some of the great men’s style icons like Gianni Agnelli and Fred Astaire; Fred would even wear them with a double breasted jacket. I am to be a marshal at the 2013 US Open at Merion in June. It should go without saying, but I cannot wait. I expect that it will be the highlight of the summer, more so than preppy girls with pearls on Nobadeer. That’s a bold statement.
Anyway, Ralph Lauren is the official outfitter for the volunteers and I believe the tournament. On Friday I received my marshaling gear in the mail, it is some bad ass stuff. Obviously, more photos of the gear are on the way. Well played Ralph, well played…
I am one of those people who believe that tweed can be worn year round. The weather and tweed itself have to be just right for it to work in summer and spring, however. I think the light gray of this jacket lends itself to usage on cool spring/summer nights as well as overcast days like today (it is 55, cloudy and raining).
I was approached last summer by the good people at Knot Standard, until then an unknown name by me in the ever growing made to measure/custom marketplace. A few things immediately caught my attention. First, they claimed to be a bespoke operation in that they could accommodate any request yet still keep their price point under $1,000 (more on that later, obviously). Second, that Knot Standard was based in Dubai. So we had a nice chat and in short order agreed upon doing a review of the company’s suits and shirts.
